ITEC, VTCT and SETA Explained: Which Beauty Qualification Do You Need?

When you start looking at beauty courses in South Africa, you quickly come across ITEC, VTCT and SETA. They all sound important, but what do they actually mean, and which one do you need? This guide explains each in plain language so you can choose a course with confidence.

Why accreditation matters

Anyone can teach a beauty course, but only an accredited qualification proves to employers and clients that you have been trained and assessed to a recognised standard. It affects where you can work, what you can earn and whether insurers and overseas employers will accept your training.

What is ITEC?

ITEC (International Therapy Examination Council) is a UK awarding body that has specialised in beauty, spa and complementary therapy qualifications for decades. ITEC exams are set and marked externally, so every student is assessed to the same international standard.

ITEC qualifications are widely recognised by spas, salons and cruise lines around the world, which is why they are popular with South African therapists who want to work abroad.

What is VTCT?

VTCT is another UK awarding body focused on vocational qualifications in beauty, hair, wellness and related industries. ITEC is part of the VTCT group, and VTCT qualifications carry similar international recognition.

Holding both ITEC and VTCT qualifications shows employers you have been trained and examined to international standards.

What is SETA?

SETAs (Sector Education and Training Authorities) are South African bodies that oversee skills training in different industries; for beauty, this falls under the Services SETA. SETA recognition shows that a training provider meets South African standards, which matters for local employers and the national qualifications framework.

Which qualification do you need?

If you plan to work only in South Africa, a SETA-recognised course is a good start. If you want the freedom to work in luxury spas, on cruise ships or overseas, an international ITEC or VTCT qualification is what employers will ask for.

The strongest position is to have both: international qualifications for global opportunities and local recognition for South African employers. That is why Helderberg School of Beauty is accredited by ITEC (UK), VTCT and SETA.

How to check a school's accreditation

  • Ask to see the school's accreditation certificates
  • Search for the school on the ITEC or VTCT website
  • Ask which qualification you will receive at the end of each course, and from which body
  • Ask about the school's pass rate in external exams
