How to Choose a Beauty School in South Africa: 10 Questions to Ask
Choosing a beauty school is one of the biggest decisions you will make at the start of your career. The right school gives you a qualification employers trust, real hands-on experience and the confidence to work anywhere in the world. The wrong one can cost you time and money. Before you enrol anywhere, here are the 10 questions we recommend every prospective student asks.

1. Is the school accredited, and by whom?
Accreditation is the single most important thing to check. Look for international accreditation such as ITEC or VTCT (both UK awarding bodies) and local recognition through the relevant SETA. International qualifications are what spas, cruise lines and overseas employers ask for.
Ask to see the accreditation certificates and check the school is listed on the awarding body's website. A reputable school will be happy to show you.
2. What is the school's pass rate?
International exams are set and marked externally, so a school's pass rate is an honest measure of how well it prepares students. Ask for the pass rate over several years, not just the most recent intake. At Helderberg School of Beauty, our students have achieved a 100% ITEC pass rate since 2012.
3. How much practical, hands-on training is included?
Beauty therapy is a practical career. You should spend a large part of your course working on real clients and models under supervision, not only on theory. Ask how many practical hours are included, whether there is a student clinic, and what equipment you will train on.
4. How big are the classes?
Smaller classes mean more one-on-one guidance from your lecturer, which makes a real difference when you are learning techniques like facials, massage, waxing or nail sculpting. Ask how many students are in a practical class and how many lecturers supervise them.
5. Who are the lecturers?
Good lecturers are qualified therapists who have worked in the industry themselves. Ask about their qualifications and experience, and how long they have been teaching at the school.
6. Does the course match the career you want?
Think about where you want to work. A full-time diploma prepares you for a broad career in spas, salons, clinics or cruise ships, while short courses let you specialise quickly in one area such as nails, lashes or makeup.
7. What are the entry requirements?
Most full-time beauty therapy diplomas require Matric, while many short and part-time courses are open to anyone with a passion for beauty. Check the requirements early so you can plan your subjects and application.
8. Are student finance options available?
Beauty training is an investment, so ask whether the school offers payment plans or works with student finance providers. Helderberg School of Beauty partners with Student Hero, and Nedbank and Capitec Education Finance through Smartfunder, for both full-time and short courses.
9. What is the campus like?
Visit before you enrol. Look at the treatment rooms, hygiene standards and equipment, and ask whether you will train with professional skincare products and up-to-date machines. A good campus feels like a working spa.
10. What happens after you graduate?
Ask where past students are working now, whether the school has industry connections, and whether you can come back for advanced courses as your career grows. Graduates who keep upskilling earn more and have more options.
