Full-Time Beauty Diploma or Short Courses: Which Is Right for You?

One of the first decisions every new beauty student faces is whether to commit to a full-time diploma or start with short courses. Both are valuable routes into the beauty industry, but they suit different goals, budgets and stages of life. Here's how to decide.

What is a full-time beauty therapy diploma?

A full-time diploma is a complete training programme that covers the full range of beauty and spa treatments. At Helderberg School of Beauty, our full-time diploma runs over three years:

  • Year 1: Beauty Specialist, including facials, manicures, pedicures, waxing, lash and brow treatments and makeup
  • Year 2: Body & Spa Therapy, including Swedish, hot stone, Indian head and sports massage, aromatherapy and body treatments
  • Year 3: Advanced Aesthetics, including micro-needling, chemical peels, laser and IPL treatments and salon management

What are short courses?

Short courses focus on one skill at a time and can be completed in days or weeks rather than years. They are ideal if you want to start earning quickly, specialise in one area, or add a new treatment to your existing skills. Popular short courses include:

  • Nail technology, gel polish and nail art
  • Day, evening and bridal makeup
  • Lash extensions, lash lifts and brow lamination
  • Facials, waxing and threading
  • Swedish, aromatherapy and hot stone massage

Choose a full-time diploma if…

  • You have finished Matric and want a long-term career in beauty
  • You want to work in luxury spas, medical aesthetic clinics or on cruise ships
  • You would like the option of working overseas
  • You want to one day open your own salon or spa

Choose short courses if…

  • You want to start earning quickly in one area, such as nails or lashes
  • You are working or studying and need a flexible schedule
  • You are already a therapist and want to add new treatments
  • You want to try the industry before committing to a longer course

Can you combine both?

Yes, and many successful therapists do. Some students start with a short course to test their passion and then move into the full-time diploma. Others complete the diploma and keep adding advanced courses, such as microblading, chemical peels or lash extensions, to stay ahead and increase their earnings.

Paying for your studies
